I grew up in South Africa, and later lived in Israel, the UK, and New York. I paint acrylic works in an expressive realism style, covering themes including Judaica & Jewish themes, as well as contemporary life and scenic works.

A question I get asked a lot is, "why acrylic?". Learn more about my unique process that turns only four pigments, white and transparent medium into millions of colors, and why I prefer to paint in acrylic instead of oil.

My Process

Latest works by Reuben Miller

New works include portraits of contemporary Gedolim, scenes from modern Israel, and paintings exploring present-day Jewish life. These pieces join an expanding collection of rabbinic portraits and Jerusalem landscapes. Recent additions feature studies of daily life in Israel's cities and neighborhoods, alongside formal portraits that document today's Jewish leadership. Each work continues an artistic documentation of Jewish continuity through realistic painting. Some works may be sold.

The City of Gold, Jerusalem, is always a vibrant place any time of the year, but especially in the middle of summer—sweltering hot and glowing with ancient stone. We see a lot of representations of the city and its famous structural elements, but rarely do we focus on the ground that has been trodden upon for thousands of years under the feet of man and beast. In this painting, I try to capture the sheer beauty of Jerusalem from an atypical perspective. The scene is arresting and solitary. It’s almost spiritually uplifting; you know where this is, and you know the holiness.

I’ve always struggled with painting clouds, finding it incredibly challenging to define their shapes, edges, and tones while balancing the reality of a dramatic cloud formation with the expressive vision in my mind. There are so many elements at play, and without solid structural features to rely on as a point of reference, it’s easy to feel unmoored. After multiple attempts, I’m happy with how this piece turned out—it’s the first time I truly like the result. Whenever I get a break from commissions or market-specific pieces, I love to experiment and let loose. Honestly, I might enjoy this more than my usual work. There’s a unique flow that emerges, unlike in preplanned pieces. I recently spent days creating abstracted portraits, letting emotion guide me and embracing expressive brushstrokes beyond my norm. These works are process-focused, not result-driven. With commissions, I cater to a client’s vision, but here, I explore without knowing the outcome—it’s incredibly freeing. This is another part of the same series of the dream destination. It’s a place that’s just perfect. It’s clean. It’s pristine. It smells of bougainvillea . The sound of nature and nothing else. No car, people, no litter. Perfection.

This piece I created probably 6 to 7 weeks ago. The photo doesn’t really do justice because the lighting isn’t expressing the warmth and the true color. The idea behind it is the romanticizing of a destination, a dream like place of hope and peace. Everyone has such destination that in their mind that they fall in love with regardless of what the true reality is, but in our mind, we envision very different from reality.

I’ve been doing a lot of experimenting over the past couple of months. Really trying to break out of the rigidity of what I am currently doing and letting the brush surprise me. Letting go is very hard. Not knowing the outcome is kind of exciting and scary at the same time. This is a small landscape that are based of a black-and-white photo that I had. Sometimes you just have to make it up as you go and see where it takes you.

When I was a kid I had this terrible habit of opening up electronics and trying to take them apart. I once did it to my dad’s stereo. Unfortunately I couldn’t put it back together. It wasn’t that I was being destructive. I was curious.
I collected wires and dc motors and low voltage lamps. Along with my brothers we used to try to make stuff. Didn’t get too far though. The coolest thing I remember we made was a spinning art piece. We attached a round piece of cardboard to the motor and had it spin. We then hit it with markers. Pretty lame in hindsight, but to us it was so cool! We dreamt up ideas of what we could make. That was part of my everyday, the dreaming, that is. ADHD to the max. I built tons of unbuildable stuff. I hoped one day to have a workshop like the one in Back to The Future where those dreams would come true.
The Tinkerer is kind of my salute to that little boy who in my imagination never grew up nor tired of dreaming.

This is a portrait of an anonymous Israeli soldier. He represents the young boys and girls, literally still teenagers, who with massive courage and bravery walk into harms way to protect their fellow citizen and defend good over evil. They are fighters for what is just and noble. They are putting their lives on the line to make sure October 7 never happens again.
